In 2025, a long-lost 17th-century painting was discovered in a Paris townhouse and later sold at auction for millions. Painted by the famous Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens, the artwork depicts a bruised and lifeless Jesus hanging on a cross.

Across centuries and cultures, the crucifixion of Jesus has remained one of the most common subjects in art, music, and film. But why does the image of an ancient execution continue to capture the imagination of so many people?

Perhaps it connects to a deeper question many of us quietly carry:
Is there more to life than this?

More than our routines. More than our regrets. More than the endless pursuit of pleasure and money. More than the pain and brokenness we see in the world.

The message of the cross speaks directly to that question.

When we look honestly at the world, and at ourselves, we see that something isn’t right. Injustice, conflict, shame, and regret remind us that life isn’t the way it’s meant to be.

The Bible calls this problem sin. It’s not simply about making mistakes; it’s the deeper brokenness that separates us from God and from one another.

Jesus said:

“Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” — John 8:34

The cross shows us how serious this problem is. Evil cannot simply be ignored. Justice matters. Christians believe that when Jesus died on the cross, He took upon Himself the weight of humanity’s sin so that forgiveness could become possible.

But the cross also tells us something remarkable about God.

In Jesus, God did not remain distant from human pain. He stepped into our world and experienced it firsthand.

Before His crucifixion, Jesus was betrayed by friends, falsely accused, publicly humiliated, and brutally tortured. The cross shows that God understands suffering, not from a distance, but from experience.

For anyone who has ever asked, “Does God see what’s happening in my life?” the cross answers: Yes.

The most powerful message of the cross is why Jesus went there.

The Bible says:

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

Jesus willingly gave His life so that we could be forgiven and restored. The cross reveals a love deeper than our failures and stronger than the brokenness of the world.

And the story doesn’t end with His death.

Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead.

“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead.” — 1 Corinthians 15:20

The resurrection means that sin, suffering, and death do not have the final word. It means there truly is more to life than this.

The cross and resurrection tell the story of a God who made a way for forgiveness, new life, and hope.
